STATE OF HAWAII CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION QUESTION

"Shall there be a convention to propose a revision of or amendments to the Constitution?"

Before the current world financial crisis, I was in favor of a Constitutional Convention as a constructive way for the people of Hawai’i to discuss many important issues including initiative and referendum, education reform, taxation reform and the creation of new counties and municipalities.

Since the State of Hawaii is now projecting deficits that could reach a billion dollars or more, I can no longer support a Constitutional Convention. The taxpayers of the state will need the millions of dollars of projected costs to provide for essential services and prevent possible layoffs of some state employees.

MY PLEDGE TO THE PEOPLE OF MOLOKA’I

If elected, I will meet with the people of Moloka’i once a month on Moloka’i to help work toward your desired future. If the people of Moloka’i want to become their own county or municipality, I will work to make that choice possible through a State Constitutional Amendment.

MY PLEDGE TO THE PEOPLE OF EAST MAUI

If elected, I will meet with the people of East Maui once a month to help work toward your desired future.

If the people of Hana or another district of East Maui want to become their own county or municipality, I will work to make that choice possible through a State Constitutional Amendment.
